Another Turbocharged Gas Processing Plants Starts Up
Posted 03/01/05

Pump Engineering, Inc. and Best Pump Works announce the start-up of another Gas Processing High Pressure TurboCharger (HPT) installation. The plant is located in Carr, Colorado and is owned and operated by the El-Paso Corporation. The plant was designed by Hanover Russell and is comprised of two identical 525 gpm amine trains. Originally, the trains were equipped with two high pressure pumps in series, each able to produce 600 psi discharge pressure. By utilizing the HPT-600 (an integral turbine/pump) El-Paso was able to remove one high pressure pump on each train from service during normal operation. The HPT requires no electricity since it is completely driven by the energy available in the rich amine stream. The HPT-600 provided a boost pressure of 510 psi at the El-Paso facility. With an electrical cost of $0.05 per kW/hr, the retrofit of each HPT-600 will save El-Paso $85,000 per year.
