AT Turbos Drive Thailand Plant Posted 07/04/07
Lindsay Reau, PEI Sales Manager, announced the successful start up of the PEI AT Hydraulic Turbocharger at the 9.2 mgd (34,575 m3/d) SWRO plant for PTT Chemicals in Thailand. The Ultra Pure RO plant is a 2-pass design that has five trains; each seawater pass is equipped with one of PEI’s AT 2400 Hydraulic Turbochargers and two ˝ capacity Torishima Pump Co. MML 125/3 multi-stage centrifugal pumps. The plant’s high pressure circuit was commissioned in just a few days, since turbocharger-equipped plants do not need the prolonged timing and balancing activities associated with isobaric energy recovery. The energy rate for the high pressure SWRO circuit, as measured by specific energy consumption (SEC) in kW•hr/m3 of permeate, is a very impressive 2.65 kW•hr/m3.
In addition to the excellent SEC, four of the Turbo’s other many advantages are illustrated in the accompanying photo: its very simple and straight forward equipment layout, its very small foot print, its ability to discharge brine against a backpressure, and its ability to be located in any convenient space in the plant, all of which greatly minimize building and installation cost. Notice there are no secondary booster pumps, sound enclosures, complicated piping manifolds, brine trenches, brine pumps, or double extended shaft motors, as commonly found on competitive RO energy recovery devices.
